March 2026, Issue 07 Koinobori Tutorial
Koinobori are traditionally displayed in Japan for Tango no Sekku, now known as Children’s Day. The carp-shaped windsocks symbolize strength and perseverance, inspired by the legend of a koi swimming upstream. Growing up in my Japanese household, we loved hanging koinobori throughout the year as a reminder of resilience and strength. While they are typically associated with May 5th, my family celebrated the season with both hina dolls and koinobori, which made spring feel extra special. Since we’re visiting Japan this month, I wanted to design my own version to celebrate that part of my childhood, and you’ll even have it ready to hang in May!
